Jinty 5 October 1974

Jinty cover 5 October 1974

(Cover artist: Mike White)

Katie Jinks and the iconic Jinty image do look a bit similar, don’t they? Katie is quite a nice blend of klutzy, funny, and sometimes surprisingly competent – here she is billed as the school’s “champion swimmer”, so not a jinx all the time by any means. In the earliest issues this strip was drawn by Mario Capaldi, but the cover page shown above does not seem to have Capaldi’s clean lines; I suspect the hand of a fill-in artist. (Edited to add: the artist is Mike White. Katie has also been drawn by Hugh Thornton-Jones.)

Stories in this issue:

  • The Jinx From St Jonah’s (artist Mike White)
  • Jackie’s Two Lives (artist Ana Rodrigues)
  • Merry at Misery House (writer Terence Magee)
  • Left-Out Linda (artist Jim Baikie)
  • Angela’s Angels (artist Leo Davy)
  • Dora Dogsbody (artist José Casanovas)
  • The Hostess with the Mostest (artist Stanley Houghton)
  • Wild Horse Summer
  • Always Together… (artist Phil Townsend)
  • Wenna the Witch (artist Carlos Freixas)

  1. This was the issue where Jinty went from 40 to 32 pages. No serials ended in the previous issue, so there was no room for ‘Bird-girl Brenda’, ‘Do-it-yourself Dot’ and some of the editorials. Brenda and Dot returned in issue 24, after ‘Angela’s Angels’ had finished.
